Mary Washington Hospital's Surgical Weight Loss Program Earns Accreditation

Fredericksburg, VA – Mary Washington Hospital’s surgical weight loss program received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

Accredited Center

The MBSAQIP program accredits inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers in the United States and Canada that have undergone an independent, voluntary, and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards. Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks but also supports continuous quality improvement.

“I am very excited about receiving the designation which now makes us an Accredited Center of Weight Loss Surgery,” says Denis Halmi, MD, Bariatric Surgeon and Medical Director for the Surgical Weight Loss program at Mary Washington Hospital. “Achieving this level of accreditation in a program as young as ours is rare and reflects our hard work and dedication.”

The American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery combined their respective national bariatric surgery accreditation programs into a single, unified program to achieve one national accreditation standard for bariatric surgery centers, the MBSAQIP® program.

MBSAQIP works to advance safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through the accreditation of bariatric surgical centers. A bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process which proves that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice. All accredited centers report their outcomes to the MBSAQIP database.
