Community Benefit Funds

The Foundations provide funds that enable Mary Washington Healthcare to acquire the very latest in technological advances and provide educational scholarships to our associates. We also administer the Joe and Mary Wilson Community Benefit Fund of Mary Washington Hospital Foundation (formerly called the Mary Washington Hospital Community Benefit Fund) and Stafford Hospital Community Benefit Fund. These foundations award grants to non-profit organizations seeking to establish health-related projects within our region.

Established in 1993, the Joe and Mary Wilson Community Benefit Fund is intended to address a wide range of health issues. The Fund provides grants to local nonprofit organizations once a year and to date has funded grants totaling more than $19 million.

The Stafford Hospital Community Benefit Fund was established in 2007 by the Stafford Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees as a way to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations addressing health issues in Stafford County. The Stafford Hospital Community Benefit Fund has awarded over $2 million in grant funding.

Both the Joe and Mary Wilson Community Benefit Fund and the Stafford Hospital Community Benefit Funds assist nonprofit organizations in improving access to care among the medically underserved, as well as organizations that focus on wellness, health education and prevention. This cooperation avoids duplicating services and ensures the best use of limited healthcare dollars. Some recipients are also partners with Mary Washington Healthcare.

Each fund is intended to provide financial resources to organizations that improve the community's general health status, contain growing healthcare costs, or to improve access for the poor and other medically underserved people.

Snowden House

Snowden House, an estate has a rich history dating back to the early 1770s, is the home of Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Foundations. The healthcare system acquired the house when it purchased the surrounding land in 1989 to build a new hospital and develop a medical campus. The original main house was destroyed by fire in 1925 and rebuilt in 1926. A stone house built in 1770 was spared by the fire and still stands on the property to this day.

Snowden House has hosted many prominent figures in history, including General Robert E. Lee, esteemed American Impressionist painter Gari Melchers, and noted landscape architect Charles Gillette, who designed Snowden’s formal gardens. While Snowden House is no longer open to the public, it is used for Mary Washington Healthcare meetings, receptions, and fundraising activities.
