
The Mary Washington Healthcare Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship is a one-year training program for family medicine doctors. During the program, fellows receive supervision from experienced family medicine OB physicians and OBGYN specialists, working in both hospital and clinic settings.
This program is accredited by the Board of Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics (BCFMO) under the American Board of Physician Specialties, meeting all necessary accreditation standards. The fellowship trains two family physicians each year in the management of complicated pregnancies and operative obstetrics, preparing them to serve in underserved or rural areas.
The program is labor-and-delivery-intensive, with opportunities to work with Maternal-Fetal Medicine, General OB-GYN, Neonatology, and Family Medicine Obstetrics faculty while also serving as junior faculty to the Family Medicine Residency Program and have chance to assist in educating medical students and residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings and maintaining a full-scope practice in adult inpatient medicine, clinic procedures, and other non-obstetric family medicine skills.
Fellows receive comprehensive training in operative vaginal deliveries, Cesarean sections, dilation and curettage, ultrasound, sterilization techniques, LARC procedures, colposcopy, LEEP, and endometrial biopsies and managing maternal diseases such as hypertension, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, and preterm labor. Weekly didactic sessions, eligible for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, are also provided. Fellows are required to complete a research or scholarly activity project before graduation.
