Learning and Growing at MWHC

A Commitment to Lifelong Learning: Where your practice becomes perfect

Mary Washington Healthcare’s experiential learning programs are designed to attract, retain and continuously grow our workforce. We offer continuous education opportunities, supported by our leadership, including community outreach and student learning programs.

Our learning programs run year-round and give students real work experience in clinical departments and non-clinical functional areas of MWHC. They are a great way to develop specific skills and knowledge, become comfortable with the professional work environment, expand on your classroom learning as well as make contacts to network, build confidence and enhance your resume.

  • For medical students, we offer clinical rotations, shadowing/observations and internships, as well as clinical preceptorship and observations.
  • For non-medical students, we offer college internships and work-based learning for high school students. Our commitment to teaching, learning and caring is a lifelong endeavor.

We value inquisitive minds looking to improve care, quality and safety. Join us!

Asking good research questions and designing projects to seek the answers are part of the practice of medicine. We are involved in research, discovery and innovation throughout the health system.

This includes:

  • Scholarly Activities
  • Clinical trials
  • Continuing education
  • Quality improvement
  • Leadership development
  • Residents Council

We have a five-year vision for learning at MWHC, and we invite you to join us as we strive for lifelong learning throughout the entire system.

Our Culture

From our humble roots, Mary Washington Healthcare is an award-winning, non-profit healthcare system in Fredericksburg, Virginia that has grown with its community in the past 120+ years. Today, we are made up of two hospitals, three emergency departments, and over 40 outpatient healthcare facilities and wellness services.

We are an award-winning health system, always striving to be better. Our commitment to high reliability principles drives us to provide safe, quality care in a patient-centered environment.

MWHC works diligently to provide every patient and associate with a healthy environment. The certifications, accreditations, and licensures we’ve earned are a direct result of the quality initiatives managed by Mary Washington Healthcare’s patient safety, performance improvement, medical support, and nursing excellence departments, as well as every associate involved in the patients’ care.

GME Resident and Fellow Well-being

We’re Here for YOU!

When you join our team, we want to ensure that you are cared for, just like our entire MWHC family. You’ll likely spend a lot of time with your team, the other residents, your faculty and staff. We integrate health promotion and well-being into many aspects of our campus and culture, including a wellness program and REACH assistance.

Life happens – we don’t want you to miss it! We are building our residency program with a balance between the intensity of residency experiences and recognizing life milestones. A strong social support network is part of a healthy life, and we want you to know that you’ll have opportunities to stay connected and build new relationships, while still striving to grow into an excellent physician!

Diversity Statement

Mary Washington Healthcare has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination of our patients or our team members. We do not exclude or treat people differently based on race, color, national origin, age, disability or sex.

Our Diversity and Cultural Competence compliments our organizational values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. It encompasses the way we work, our culture, environment and the respect we have for all people and ideas.

Diversity and Cultural Competence includes everyone and everything—while its primary focus may often revolve around issues of race, gender, and ethnicity, we can neither define nor limit diversity solely by these factors. Diversity extends to age, personal and work history, education, function, and personality—including lifestyle, sexual orientation, geographic origin, tenure with the organization, merit or non-merit status, and ways of thinking, leadership abilities, skill levels, experiences, viewpoints, expression of thoughts and differing ways of delivering services provided there is consistency in the values we share.

Diversity is inclusion. It stresses equal opportunity, recognizes and respects the multitude of differences that employees bring to the workplace, and acknowledges the changing "face" of the community we serve.

The affirmation of diversity and full cooperation by all managers, supervisors, and associates is not only expected but required. MWHC believes that excellence will be achieved through the recognition of the value of every individual, promote an environment that respects and embraces the diversity of our associates in terms of their individual skills, knowledge, talent enables them to achieve their full potential, to contribute fully and to derive maximum benefit and enjoyment from their employment with MWHC.
