Our Transitional Year Residency Program is committed to training physicians upholding a learning and working environment that is conducive to academic excellence. The transitional year will provide individualized opportunities enhancing the medical knowledge and clinical skills of recent medical graduates to facilitate a transition to their selected categorical specialty training program while providing high quality care.
Mary Washington Hospital is a Level II Trauma Center with 471-bed, full-service hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia and will serve as the primary training site for residents in the Transitional Year program. In addition, our healthcare system offers a variety of clinical services for patients in the community such as behavioral health, cardiac services, dermatology, hospice services, imaging services, physical therapy, surgical services, trauma services, and wellness programs.
Residents will have the opportunity develop strong clinical skills during the multiple rotations including inpatient ward, ER, general surgery, ambulatory clinic and our wide variety of electives. Our focus is to develop a curriculum that is flexible to the needs of the resident and promotes scholarly activities, research projects, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Through our mentorship program our faculty mentors will assist with curriculum recommendations, offer career guidance and promote work-life balance, which includes promoting physician wellness and practicing self-care with attention to one's own physical and mental well-being.
