Andrew Tiu, MD

Dr. Tiu is a dedicated hematologist and medical oncologist, with training from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC and the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA.

Previously, he worked with the Comprehensive Care Clinic for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders with a focus on benign hematologic and malignant hematologic disorders. His research on global coagulation assays paved the way for focusing on complex hematologic conditions requiring multidisciplinary approach from any medicine or surgical specialty.

His scope encompasses hematologic disorders in women’s health especially during pregnancy, perioperative management of patients with bleeding or clotting disorders, transition of care of childhood inherited hematologic disorders to adult hematologic care, and evaluation and management of hypercoagulable disorders, bleeding disorders, cytopenias, proliferative disorders, hemoglobinopathies, anemias, iron related disorders, bone marrow pathologies, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphomas, and plasma cell disorders.

He has worked at the Washington, DC, Veterans Affairs Cancer Center taking care of all malignancies of veterans. Dr. Tiu was the first person to demonstrate the association of Agent Orange exposure among veterans and the development of myeloid disorders such as the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms suggesting early mutagenesis and increased cardiovascular disease leading to the Conquer Cancer Merit Award from American Society for Clinical Oncology and featured in ASCO Post, healio.com, usmedicine.com.

He was the National Champion of the Annual Doctor’s Dilemma Competition (Medical Jeopardy) of the American College of Physicians in 2019 and also the winner of the Blood Wars (Hematology Medical Jeopardy) in 2022. He won numerous intramural research awards and grants (totaling $370,000) during his fellowship training.

His vision is providing comprehensive blend of community and academic care to the neighboring counties of Fredericksburg, Virginia, continuing clinical research in the community, multidisciplinary approach, and increasing community access to clinical trials and treatments such as immune effector cell therapies.
