RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) elected the 2018-2019 slate of officers to its Board of Directors during this week’s VHHA Annual Meeting. The Board unanimously elected Valley Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Mark H. Merrill as Chairman; Mary Washington Healthcare President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Michael P. Formerly known as the Spring Conference, the Annual Meeting held this week (April 25-27) in Williamsburg brings together hospital and health system leaders and other healthcare stakeholders from across the Commonwealth and beyond for a collaborative experience. The Annual Meeting aims to have representation from every Virginia hospital and health system; engage a wider audience, including early and mid-careerists; and reinforce the work being done at VHHA on behalf of its members. The theme of this year’s conference hosted by the Virginia Hospital Research & Education Foundation (VHREF) is “The Business of Health.”
“Our health care delivery system is rapidly changing as a result of innovation, advances in care, and emerging treatment options,” said Merrill. “The dedicated and caring people who work in Virginia hospitals are focused on improving health care quality, safety, value, and service, and continuously working to improve so we can better serve patient needs. By collaborating with our peers in the hospital community, we can learn from each other to enhance our organizations as we strive to make Virginia the healthiest state in the nation. Shared learning events like the VHHA Annual Meeting are an opportunity to gain new ideas and encourage that improvement work. As the newly elected VHHA Board Chairman, I thank my colleagues for the faith they have placed in me and I look forward to helping continue our collaborative work on improving public health in the Commonwealth.”
In addition to the election of new officers, recipients of VHHA’s Outstanding Service Awards are recognized at the Annual Meeting. This year, VHHA presented the Distinguished Service Award to John L. Fitzgerald, CEO of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital; the Excellence in Governance Award to Alda L. White, Immediate Past Chair of the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees; the Excellence in Governance Award to Robert “Bob” Fort, Past Board Chair of Sentara Healthcare; and the Meritorious Service Award to Nathaniel L. Bishop, D.Min., President of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

Tamber, former Physician Editor of TEDMED and Co-Founder of the Creating Health Collaborative; Phillip Newbold, former CEO of Beacon Health System in South Bend, IN; Barbara Blevins of The Studer Group; and Matt Thornhill of SIR.
