Mary Washington Healthcare First in Northern Virginia and Washington DC to Operate with the New da Vinci 5 Surgical Robots

Fredericksburg, VA, (October 11, 2024) – Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) is revolutionizing surgical care in the Fredericksburg region by becoming the first healthcare system in northern Virginia and Washington, DC, and one of the pioneers worldwide, to adopt the cutting-edge da Vinci 5 robot from Intuitive Surgical. This state-of-the-art fifth-generation multiport robotic system, which has undergone decades of development and incorporates over 150 enhancements from its previous iteration, will provide advanced surgical options to patients.

Under the skilled hands of Avinash Narayana, DO, FACS, at Mary Washington Hospital, and Kurian Thott, MD, FACOG, at Stafford Hospital, MWHC has successfully completed its inaugural surgical procedures using the da Vinci 5 robotic platform. These groundbreaking surgeries mark a significant milestone in the region's healthcare landscape.

By offering robotic-assisted procedures, both Mary Washington Hospital (MWH) and Stafford Hospital aim to enhance patient outcomes and experiences. Patients can expect shorter hospital stays, reduced blood loss, lower infection rates, minimal scarring, and faster recovery times. MWH has been at the forefront of robotic surgery since 2008, when it introduced its first da Vinci robot. Over the years, MWH has continually upgraded its technology, incorporating additional surgical robots for lung cancer detection, knee replacements, and hip replacements. Stafford Hospital, which launched its robotic surgery program with the da Vinci Xi robot in late 2023, has already completed 300 surgeries.
