Fredericksburg, VA (March 26, 2025) – Mary Washington Hospital proudly celebrated the grand opening of the new Joe and Mary Wilson Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 25. It was a special evening marking this milestone in newborn care, attended by hospital leaders, associates, and NICU alumni families.
The expanded NICU, more than doubling in size, features 20 private rooms and a five-bed open ward designed for healing, comfort, and family connection. Named in honor of Joe and Mary Wilson, whose $5 million donation reflects their longstanding philanthropic legacy, the Mary Washington Hospital NICU holds personal significance for the family—their granddaughter was a patient there more than 20 years ago.
“On behalf of the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, I want to express our deepest gratitude to the Wilson family for their incredible generosity and steadfast dedication to our community," said Xavier Richardson, President of the Foundation. "Their support guarantees that our tiniest patients receive exceptional care in an environment designed to foster healing and hope.”
As the region’s most experienced Level III NICU, MWH offers 24/7 care from board-certified neonatologists through its partnership with Children’s National Hospital. Families benefit from access to specialized pediatric care, collaborative research, and a highly skilled team of nurses, respiratory therapists, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists.
“This expansion is more than just new rooms—it’s a promise to our community,” said Ann Weed, Director of Women’s Services. “Every detail was designed to provide the best possible start for our littlest patients.”
