Madeleine Madamba shines at Mary Washington Hospice and Grief Support Services, infusing every encounter with energy and compassion that leaves a lasting mark on those around her.
Drawn to Mary Washington Hospice by the chance to blend creativity with her desire to help others, Madeleine shares, “I felt Mary Washington Hospice offered the opportunity to support my career goals. My goal after the undergraduate period is to continue schooling with the hopes of being an art therapist.” The fact that the organization once had an art therapist confirmed for her that her interests would be nurtured and encouraged.
Facilitating art therapy groups and caring for patients, Madeleine has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of creative expression. “The most poignant thing I’ve gleaned was reinforcement for a belief that I already had; it is so important to encourage autonomy,” she explains. “For a population so overlooked as older adults, reminding these folks that they have the ability to express themselves through art builds their confidence.”

She has also learned the value of gentle comfort in challenging moments. “I’ve also learned the ins and outs of hospice, how to be a gentle source of comfort in a difficult time, and so many other skills that I can carry forward in my career.”
Her favorite moments are found in the art groups, where joy comes from seeing participants embrace the artistic process, take pride in their creations, and connect with others. Madeleine says, “It’s all the little moments during the art groups that gave me the most joy. Seeing participants enjoy the artistic process, watching them beam with pride over their creations, chatting with them, and coaxing even the shyest to socialize — it is all so rewarding. Positive feedback from facility nurses, staff and MWHC personnel was the cherry on top. I felt great knowing I was making a positive difference in the participants’ lives and hopefully encouraging expression and autonomy through an art activity.”
For students and young adults considering Mary Washington Hospice and Grief Support Services, Madeleine shares, “Interning here has been such a great opportunity to get valuable real-life field experience! When I was asked what I was seeking from this internship, I said I wanted to get experience working directly with the population, hopefully with something related to artistic expression. MWHC supported my wishes fully. Next thing I knew, I was routinely going to facilities and facilitating art groups in a leadership role! If what you’re seeking from your internship is attainable, your supervisors will help you reach your goals and support you through the process.”
Madeleine’s creativity, kindness and vibrant spirit bring color to Mary Washington Hospice. Her dedication uplifts and inspires those around her, and she looks forward to creating more meaningful moments through art therapy.
