The Regional Cancer Center is committed to offering the best available rehabilitation services for our patients. We partner with Rachel Coggins, DO, a physiatrist with Mary Washington Physical Medicine, to offer specialized rehabilitation for patients with a cancer diagnosis.
The physiatry-led START Program (Specialized Targeted Advanced Rehab Therapy) is cancer rehabilitation that provides patients with the latest cancer rehab techniques and research-based protocols to help cancer patients optimally heal and function.
It's no secret that chemotherapy, radiation, and other common treatments used to help you battle cancer can negatively affect the quality of your daily life. Whether you're newly diagnosed or long finished with treatment, we can help address the unique functional needs of cancer patients before, during, and after cancer treatment.
Areas of rehabilitation may include:
Our care is based on conventional medicine and is delivered by knowledgeable, sensitive medical experts at the top of their fields, specially trained to address functional problems related to all forms of cancer. They comprise a variety of disciplines including physicians; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; registered nurses; nutritionists; and mental health professionals.
The START program not only supports your physical healing, but also provides referrals for emotional, nutrition, and smoking cessation resources. We offer you a personalized rehab plan with an interdisciplinary approach.
Your cancer rehabilitation plan will center around individualized goals that address your unique needs and put you on a path to START improving your daily functioning and quality of life by:
Each team member offers expert medical guidance, training, encouragement, and support throughout the program. Feeling well enough to resume normal day to day activities is essential for you and your family to enjoy a good quality of life.
Our premium cancer rehabilitation services help you heal physically and emotionally from treatment side effects, and they are available if you are undergoing or have completed treatment. We also offer special programs called “pre-habilitation” prior to when cancer treatment begins so that we can help you prepare for treatment. Most of MWHC's cancer rehabilitation services are reimbursed by health insurance providers. Access to world-class follow-up care without added medical costs will enable you to regain your health and get your life back on track.
