Kids Helping Kids

A Grief Support Program for Schools

Grief can feel overwhelming, especially for kids. When children experience a loss, they may feel alone, confused, or unsure of how to talk about their feelings. That’s where Kids Helping Kids comes in.

What is Kids Helping Kids?

Kids Helping Kids is a Mary Washington Grief Support Services program that brings help directly to schools. Our community bereavement liaison works with schools to provide a 7-week grief group for students and/or grief education for staff.

How Does the Program Work?

Our trained bereavement liaison visits schools to:

  • Facilitate grief groups: These small, safe groups allow kids to share their feelings, listen to others, and learn healthy ways to cope.
  • Provide grief education: We teach kids and educators about grief, helping them understand what they’re feeling and how to support each other.
  • Create connection: By meeting with others who are experiencing similar challenges, kids see they are not alone and find strength in community.

Why Is This Important?

Grief is a natural response to loss, but it can be especially hard for children to navigate. Kids Helping Kids provides a safe space for them to process their feelings and learn coping skills. Early support can make a big difference in their emotional well-being and long-term resilience.
