When to seek care?

Most small injuries may be addressed at home without an emergency room visit. Sometimes, however, a trip to the hospital emergency room is necessary in order to obtain urgent treatment.

Generally speaking, it is a good idea to seek emergency care for your child any time you believe your child needs critical care, or displays any of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood / bloody sputum
  • Blue / purple skin, lip, or nail bed coloration
  • Puncture wounds
  • Chest / stomach pressure or pain
  • Sudden weakness, dizziness, vision changes
  • Mental stage changes, such as unconsciousness, confusion, or trouble waking
  • Seizures
  • Bites, including snake, dog, animal, or human
  • Serious pain / motion loss or sensation loss at any place on the body
  • Serious bleeding / bleeding that continues when pressure is applied
  • Severe burns / facial burns
  • Broken bones / fractures
  • Injuries to the head, spinal cord, or eyes
  • Possible allergic reactions such as wheezing, hives, facial swelling, lip swelling, eye region swelling, tongue swelling, fainting, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing

Please note that this is not a complete list. Other symptoms and problems may also necessitate emergency care. Call your child's physician with any questions or concerns.
