Adult Partial Hospitalization Program

Adult Partial Hospitalization is a group therapy program for adults ages 18 and up that meets every Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s designed for those experiencing mental health or substance abuse issues who may require more intensive treatment than outpatient counseling alone can provide.

Common Issues We Address

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Inability to function in daily life
  • Self-injurious behaviors

Many insurance companies and Medicare cover this program.

Participants in our program receive compassionate, caring guidance to help them to improve challenging aspects of their lives that are causing them difficulties in daily functioning.

What Our Program Promotes

  • Healthy eating and sleeping habits
  • Involvement in recreational activities and hobbies
  • Positive relationships
  • Compassion and empathy for others
  • Respect for self and others
  • Personal accountability

Our professional counselors recognize each person’s unique circumstances and help them in accomplishing goals toward recovery. The treatment team may include a licensed psychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker, a clinical therapist, an expressive therapist, and a registered nurse.

Each patient’s scheduled attendance at meetings is a cooperative agreement between the patient and the clinical staff. A partial hospitalization stay has no set length; it’s based on the patient’s needs and personal situation.

Most patients are referred by family members, therapists, medical professionals, clergy, or friends, but individuals may also admit themselves. Patients should be medically stable and able to safely continue living at home or an assisted living community.

How It Works

At admission, one of our clinicians helps the patient identify actions he or she can take to begin the journey toward positive change. They work together to form a plan of action that becomes their road map for treatment.

Adult partial hospitalization is a group process that fosters social interaction and independence. A wide variety of topics is discussed and therapeutic approaches are introduced to help patients hone their coping skills in a community setting.

Patients are encouraged to discuss in their group sessions how they are progressing with their action plans.

Each patient is also encouraged to schedule at least one session with family members.

What the Program Offers
Group Therapy

This is a major component in partial hospitalization, where participants discuss issues, find solutions to problems, and develop a support system.

Topics include:

  • Problem-solving
  • Stress management
  • Coping skills
  • Addictive behaviors
  • Mood management

Depending on participants’ needs, specialty subgroups may be formed to address women’s or men’s issues, domestic violence, job searching, spiritual concerns, and sexual abuse.

Family Therapy

Having an outside support system is very important for those coping with personal problems. Bonding with loved ones promotes growth and healing. Each patient is encouraged to participate in one family session so that loved ones may learn how to best provide help and support during recovery and beyond.

Individual Session

Patients are encouraged to participate in one individual session to set goals and make plans for their eventual discharge.

Case Management

A case manager is available during the patient’s stay to answer discharge planning questions. Each patient leaves with clear instructions on how to continue therapy and manage medications, with referrals to community resources as needed.

Medication Management

Our staff psychiatrist conducts a full evaluation upon admission. Any medications being taken are initially reviewed and then re-evaluated weekly to monitor their effectiveness.

Intensive Outpatient Program

When you, or your loved one, are ready to begin long-term recovery from addiction, Snowden’s Intensive Outpatient Program is ready for you.

Based on the most current, evidence-based programs from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, the leading U.S. drug and alcohol addiction treatment center and recovery community, the Intensive Outpatient Program engages you and your family support network to build on the 12-step model for chemical abuse recovery.

The Intensive Outpatient Program Promotes:

  • Social connectivity
  • Healthy eating and sleeping habits
  • Involvement in recreation and hobbies
  • Compassion and empathy
  • Respect for self and others
  • Personal accountability

How the Intensive Outpatient Program Works:

The Intensive Outpatient Program at Snowden focuses on helping you create a foundation for long-term recovery and, by the end of treatment, connection with a community support group. Education and participation in a group therapy forum prepares family to become an effective support network.

At Snowden, addiction is treated as a primary disease which can coexist with other illnesses, both physical and psychological. In addition to the impulsive use of alcohol and drugs, chemical dependence is addressed as a system of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors which ultimately affect the user and his loved ones.

Your treatment focuses on maintaining an environment free of mind-altering drugs. You will have help working through denial and other defense mechanisms as well as strengthening foundational skills for living a healthy recovery lifestyle through:

  • Individual session - an initial one-on-one session to create personal therapy goals and begin planning for discharge.
  • Group therapy - this major component of the Intensive Outpatient Program features group discussions, processing, problem-solving, and education to help you broaden and strengthen coping, communication and other skills proven necessary for sustainable recovery while creating a support system. Group topics include coping skills, mood management, stress management, and addictive behaviors.
  • Expressive therapy - weekly sessions promote your creative expression of thoughts and feelings in a non-traditional format.
  • Family education - your growth and healing can be enhanced through a strong family support system outside of treatment. You and your family participate together on Wednesday evenings in a safe, regulated forum to learn about the disease of addiction, its neuro-biological impact, and relationship to family dynamics as well as effective communication skills and ways to provide support.

These low-stress sessions assist you in development of coping, stress management and relaxation skills.

Referrals and Hours
