Total Joint Replacement Pre-Op Visit Program
Mary Washington Home Health will visit your home about two weeks before
your surgery. This visit is complimentary, and will help prepare you and
your home prior to your total joint replacement procedure. This visit
is only offered for patients of Mary Washington Home Health.
During this visit, we will:
- Check your home for safety concerns
- See if you need special medical equipment
- Teach you and your caregivers what to expect after surgery
- Offer telehealth visits if needed
Home Safety Check
Our team will look at different areas of your home to make sure you are
safe after surgery. We will check:
- Support system – Do you have caregivers to help?
- Home entrance – Are there handrails, good lighting, or stairs?
- Living spaces – Are chairs, sofas, and walkways easy to use?
- Bathroom – Is it safe to move around, and is the shower/tub easy
to access?
- Bedroom – Is the bed at a good height, and is there enough lighting?
- Stairs – Are there handrails and good lighting?
- Daily tasks – Who will help with meals, laundry, trash, or pet care?
- Medications – Who will manage them, and how will you stay on schedule?
Patient Education
We will provide helpful information for you and your caregivers, including:
- Exercises to help you recover
- How to keep your leg or arm elevated (if needed)
- Managing pain and medications
- How to safely use stairs
- What to expect from outpatient therapy
Personalized Recommendations
After the home safety check, we will give you a summary with:
- Safety tips
- Any special medical equipment you may need
- Whether a nurse may need to visit
- A printed guide for you and your caregivers
